Haircare tips you shouldn’t ignore

Haircare tips you shouldn’t ignore

With just a little 'regular' care, you can make your hair glamourous. Mind you, the key word is 'regular'. You need to be consistent to see results. Here are the tips...

Wash off the dirt and grime
Do not use harsh shampoos to wash your hair; it strips it off all the necessary moisture. Use only tepid tap water. Hot water should be avoided.

Use the right hair products
Avoid products with formaldehyde or alcohol — they will dry out hair. Try to use natural products that are gentler. Consult a trichologist to find out the product that is right for you.

Stay hydrated
Staying hydrated is important for healthy hair and skin; so make sure to drink enough water. Eat fish, flaxseed, nuts and other foods rich in omega-3 fatty acid. Vitamin supplements containing biotin are also beneficial.

Use a wide-tooth wooden comb
Always use a wide-tooth comb to remove tangles. Also, never use a hair brush on wet hair.

Get a hot oil massage
Once a week, get a hot oil massage. Make sure to oil your hair twice a week. Leave it overnight and wash off.

Don't forget the conditioner and serum
Use a leave-in conditioner or hair serum daily after bath. Also go for a wash-off conditioner after every shampoo.

Businessman arrested over rape of Irish woman in Kolkata

KOLKATA: Police said on Wednesday they have arrested a man accused of raping an Irish woman who volunteered at a children's charity in Kolkata.
The local businessman who was arrested will be produced in court later Wednesday, according to a police official, who said he could not be named because he wasn't authorized to speak to reporters.
The man attended a party the woman hosted to celebrate her 21st birthday late Friday, the official said. She later went to the man's house where she drank a cup of tea and passed out, then she was raped, the official said.
Few other details were immediately available.
The reported assault comes as other attacks against women have heightened concerns about sexual violence in India.
On Tuesday, police reported that an American tourist was gang-raped in Manali. Three men picked her up in a truck while she was hitchhiking, then drove to a secluded spot and raped her, police officer Sher Singh said.
No arrests had been made as of Tuesday afternoon, Singh said.
In March, six men were arrested in the gang rape of a Swiss cyclist, and a British hotel guest jumped from a third-floor window fearing a sexual attack when the hotel owner tried to force his way into her room.
The fatal gang rape of an Indian student in New Delhi in December sparked protests demanding better protection for women. The government in response passed a law increasing prison terms for rape and making voyeurism, stalking, acid attacks and the trafficking of women punishable under criminal law.

Amazon launches its India marketplace

The marketplace-available online at amazon.in-model helps Amazon overcome Indian regulatory hurdles.

BANGALORE: Amazon.com, the world's largest online retailer, has made an entry into the fast-growing Indian e-commerce market with its Amazon.in, which is designed as a market place that facilitates transaction between buyers and sellers.

The marketplace-available online at amazon.in-model helps Amazon overcome Indian regulatory hurdles that prevent foreign online retailers from having a fully owned Indian arm selling directly in India. Country manager Amit Agarwal said the model adopted by Amazon is fully compliant with all relevant Indian laws.

With about 130 million internet users, which is fast-growing, India is one of world's largest opportunities for online retailers.

In the current model, Amazon.in does not own any of the merchandise that is sold through the website but merely acts as an aggregator to all the retailers who wish to exhibit their products on the website. In Amazon's US website, there are both Amazon-owned goods and third-party products being sold.

To begin with, Amazon.in will sell some 7 million book titles available for purchase and nearly 13,000 movie titles and the online retailer plans to expand into other categories such as cameras and phones in the near future. Agarwal refused to share any timeline for this.

"Our vision is to become a trusted and meaningful sales channel for retailers of all sizes across India, enabling them to succeed and grow their business online," said Amit Agarwal, vice president, and country manager, Amazon India.

Amazon has been actively lobbying with the government of India to relax the regulations against foreign e-commerce companies and allow foreign direct investment in online retail. Global vice-president Paul E Misener met India's commerce and industry minister Anand Sharma in February to discuss the issue.

While the government had relaxed norms for offline multi-brand retail, where it allowed 51 percent FDI, it decided against implementing similar provisions for the players on the web.

Apart from letting retail sellers from exhibiting their products on the website, Amazon India has an option called Fulfillment by Amazon wherein it would provide end-to-end logistics solutions to retailers who wish to avail of this service.

"This is the same model which is followed by Amazon.com in other countries where fulfillment is done by Amazon. The seller still owns the inventory," said Greg Greeley, vice present- international expansions.

Amazon has started off by setting up a fulfillment center on the outskirts of Mumbai where merchandise is stored and delivered from, using Amazon's own personnel as well as third-party couriers.

Amazon.in faces stiff competition from Indian retailers like Flipkart, Snapdeal, Homeshop18 and Indiatimes Shopping owned by the Times Group. Amazon India is already operating Junglee.com, a price-comparison portal launched in February last year. Instead of selling products on its web page, Junglee.com sends visitors to the website of the seller.

Police slap MCOCA on Sreesanth, others citing D-Company links

Citing underworld links, the Delhi Police Special Cell on Tuesday invoked the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against all the accused in the IPL spot-fixing case, including cricketers S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan. The police also named underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and his aide Chhota Shakeel as the "controllers" of the fixing-betting racket.
Police claimed to have evidence, including telephone intercepts, to link the accused with the gangsters. The police told the court that the "on-field performance of the players were manipulated by the network through shady deals of gifts, money and women".
Stating that "the illegal proceeds made through the racket were invested in economic activities", the police said it was the "overseas actors who decided the rates at which the betting was to be conducted".
Citing links with "organised crime syndicates based abroad", special public prosecutor Rajeev Mohan told the sessions court that the "command for the crime" came from abroad, from "persons who have a history" of organised criminal activity.
"The arrested persons have been found to have been playing the role of conspirators, abettors and facilitators for the crime syndicate," he said, adding that the money was sent from India to persons in Pakistan and Dubai.
"It has been stated that the approval for invoking MCOCA has been accorded by Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) on the premise that the arrested persons/ accused... were in communication with each other and with their other associates, who are still absconding, including those associates who are based abroad," noted Additional Sessions Judge Sanjiv Jain, who heard the MCOCA proceedings.
The court accepted the argument that MCOCA could be invoked as Chhota Shakeel, named with Dawood Ibrahim and "unidentified accused", has a history of cases against him and would come within the ambit of "organised crime".

Intel introduces fourth generation processors

Intel Corp unveiled its fourth generation processors in Taipei today in a bid to give personal computers a new lease of life amid stiff competition from smartphones and tablets. (AP)

Intel Corp unveiled its fourth generation processors in Taipei today in a bid to give personal computers a new lease of life amid stiff competition from smartphones and tablets.
The US chip giant said the new processors -- introduced at Computex, Asia's biggest IT trade fair -- have been designed for its thin 'ultrabook' laptops to combine the performance of a PC with the mobility of a tablet.
"It's (the ultrabook) a tablet when you want it, and a notebook when you need it," said Kirk Skaugen, senior vice president and general manager of Intel's PC client group.
The "two-in-one" ultrabooks using the new processors will allow a 50 per cent rise in battery life and also offer faster data encryption when compared to the third generation chips, he said.
"This is the largest generation-over-generation gain in the company's history, equating to over nine hours of battery life for some ultrabooks based on the new processors," Skaugen said.
The new chips will also allow for sharper resolution graphics and boost the speed of online games, he added.
The launch of the new chips came as J T Wang, chairman of Taiwan's leading computer vendor Acer, pronounced the "PC is not dead".
Intel, the world's biggest maker of chips for PCs, has been struggling to make inroads in the surging market for small processors for smartphones and tablets.

It is learnt that Aamir Khan, with whom Jiah starred in Ghajini, visited her residence last night.
Jiah was reportedly in a relationship with Sooraj Pancholi, son of actor couple Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab. She was heartbroken after a failed relationship with him which possibly drove her to commit suicide.
Sooraj and Jiah spoke over telephone a number of times on Monday before she ended her life, sources had earlier said.

Jiah's mother and sister had gone out and she was alone at the house when she took the extreme step.
Both Sooraj and Aditya were questioned by the police in connection with the case.

Jiah shot into the limelight in 2007 with her debut movie Nishabd in which she starred opposite megastar Amitabh Bachchan. She got a Filmfare Best Debutant nomination.
She later worked in Aamir Khan's Ghajini and Akshay Kumar's Housefull.

Mamata predicts strong show by regional parties in Lok Sabha poll

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said regional parties will do well in the next Lok Sabha election, but evaded a question on whether TMC will lead any non-Congress and non-BJP alliance at the Centre.
“I feel that regional parties would do well in the next Lok Sabha election. I will be happy if they (regional parties) come together,” Ms. Banerjee told reporters here.
Asked if she is ready to lead any non-Congress or non-BJP alliance at the national level after the next Lok Sabha election, she replied, “I don’t want any chair. I am ready to be there as a worker. If anybody comes forward, I don’t mind. I am not for power and I fight in the interest of the people. We had left UPA-2 government in the interest of the people. Even the Prime Minister has said there are no permanent enemies in politics.”
Ms. Banerjee criticised the Congress-led UPA government for hiking prices of coal, fertilisers and other commodities, which affected the people, and cited the drubbing the Congress has received in the current round of by-elections.

Black box, data recorder taken from Cebu Pacific plane; pilots grounded

A giant crane tries to lift the grounded Cebu Pacific Airbus from the mud off the runway at Davao International Airport on Tuesday. By nightfall, workers had pulled the plane out and towed it out of the runway. FILE PHOTO
MANILA, Philippines — The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines said Wednesday its investigators have retrieved the black box and flight data recorder of the Cebu Pacific Airbus 320 plane that missed the runway on landing at Davao International Airport in heavy rain last Sunday.
CAAP deputy director-general and acting spokesman Rodante Joya said the team will take the black box and flight data recorder to the Airbus office in Singapore, where the devices would be opened to recover pertinent data that could be used in the probe.
Joya said the plane’s pilots, Capt. Antonio Roel Oropesa and First Officer Edwin Perello, have both been grounded for the duration of the investigation and might be summoned to shed light on the incident.
The CAAP official vowed stringent penalties wou8ld be imposed if it is determined that there was improper maintenance of the aircraft or if the crew or pilots were guilty of misconduct.
“If they committed a big violation—for example, it’s proven that they had taken illegal substances or alcohol—then that’s punishable with revocation of license,” Joya told reporters.
Joya, a retired Philippine Air Force general, was one of the CAAP officials who earlier said that pilot error was the likely cause of the accident,  not technical problems or the bad weather.
“As of now there’s no indication of engine problems. Despite the downpour, the pilot reported seeing the runway and the plane was cleared for landing,” he said.
He said the investigation will also include the alleged inaction and other lapses of the crew which the plane’s passengers had complained about.
Joya said the CAAP has also ordered Davao International Airport general manager Frederick San Felix to submit a written report on the incident, following complaints by the Davao City government that its rescue teams were denied entry to the airport minutes after the accident.
The CAAP also defended the agency from criticism that it was protecting Cebu Pacific because it took so long for the aircraft to be removed from a grassy strip of earth next to the runway’s shoulder where the plane touched down, its nose lurching into the ground.
In a radio interview, CAAP deputy director general John Andrews said the main reason the agency could not readily take over the operations to extricate the aircraft from was because CAAP lacked the necessary heavy equipment. The airport was shut down for two days, disrupting air transportation to and from a major regional business hub.
He said the agency also had to wait for Cebu Pacific’s consent  before moving the $40-million, 60-ton aircraft.
“The CAAP has no legal right to touch the aircraft until there is consent from the owner. They said their insurance claims might be affected. We might get sued. Never mind the suit, but we (CAAP office in Davao) had no equipment,” he said, adding that only the CAAP units in Manila and Cebu had the machinery to remove aircraft.
He said the CAAP will fast-track the investigation.
“We will determine if the pilots committed lapses in the procedures because, more or less, it is almost certain that this was caused by human error, pilot error,” Andrews said.
The accident occurred while European Union air safety officials were visiting the country to determine if the country could be taken off the regional bloc’s blacklist of countries with aviation safety standards below international norms.
“I think the ban will be removed. What happened [in Davao] showed what we can do if there’s an incident like that,” Andrews replied when asked if the Davao incident will have a bearing on the evaluation, adding that the EU air safety officials’ focus was whether the CAAP as a regulatory body was doing its job well.
Cebu Pacific’s vice president for marketing and distribution, Candice Iyog, insisted in a television interview Wednesday there was no emergency  to warrant the immediate evacuation of the passengers.
In a television interview, Iyog said the airline had to wait for experts from the Singapore to determine how to remove the plane as parts of it had sunk in the mud.
“It wasn’t an emergency landing. It was a normal landing. The plane got clearance to land and landed on the runway safely. There was a heavy downpour and we don’t know if the wind was strong but it (the aircraft) veered off to the side of the runway. We will know what really happened during the investigation,” she said.
She said eyewitness accounts about the pilot visiting the lavatory several times and ordering coffee would have to be “validated.”
Iyog also defended Cebu Pacific crew whom passengers had accused of neglect and inaction. She said the crew’s main priority was how to deplane the passengers safely.
“Our crew observed the standard procedures of this kind of incident. After the plane landed, they did not see anything outside because of the heavy rains. They looked if the engine is burning or if there are other emergency situations, but the pilot said everything was under control so what our crew did as instructed was a precautionary evacuation,” she said.
“It’s not an emergency evacuation wherein all slides will be deployed and everybody will jump out of the plane. We did it (precautionary evacuation) because we want to make sure no one gets hurt in the deplaning, since the plane was already tipped on its nose. People might get hurt if every one will rush to the exit in panic,” Iyog added.
The airline official also said the smoke reported in the cabin by witnesses probably came from the aircraft’s rubber tires  as the aircraft screeched on the runway.
“According to the pilot there was no smoke when he looked into the cabin. It could be from the rubber on the pavement as the plane landed. But the smoke dissipated. And it was clear, you can see from the front to the back of the cabin. It’s not [the kind of] smoke wherein there’s no visibility,” she said.
Iyog said the actions of the crew and pilots would be reviewed and that airline would draft new guidelines on how to handle emergencies.
At Ninoy Aquino International Airport, flights to and from Davao were back to normal Wednesday. At total of 27 flights and return trips were scheduled Wednesday, although several flights departed or arrived late.
The Manila International Airport Authority, state operator of NAIA, said a total of 86 flights were cancelled because of the Davao incident.
The MIAA sent a three-man team from its fire and rescue division to help in the removal of the disabled aircraft.

AEG Live CEO: Jackson lawsuit is extortion attempt

In this March 5, 2009 file photo, US singer Michael Jackson announces at a press conference that he is set to play ten live concerts at the London O2 Arena in July 2009. AEG Live LLC executive Paul Gongaware testified Monday June 3, 2013, that he never considered doing a background check on Jackson’s personal physician and did not think a physician’s debts would impact their medical judgment. AP
LOS ANGELES—The head of AEG Live told a jury that he believes a lawsuit filed by Michael Jackson’s mother against the concert promotion company was a baseless extortion attempt.
CEO Randy Phillips also said Tuesday that the company bears no responsibility for Jackson’s 2009 death, as his mother contends.
Katherine Jackson is suing AEG Live LLC, claiming it failed to properly investigate the doctor who was later convicted of her son’s death. AEG denies wrongdoing.
Phillips said he agreed with statements attributed to him and defense attorney Marvin S. Putnam that the case was a shakedown.
“Yes or no, answer? Yes,” Phillips said in response to a question by Katherine Jackson’s attorney Brian Panish.
Phillips is the highest-ranking AEG executive to testify in the case, now in its sixth week.
He will likely be asked about numerous emails he sent and received about Jackson’s health in the final weeks of the superstar’s life, as well as any interactions he had with former cardiologist Dr. Conrad Murray.
Murray agreed to serve as Jackson’s doctor for $150,000 a month while he performed 50 shows titled “This Is It” in London’s 02 Arena in 2009 and early 2010.
AEG denies hiring Murray and agreeing to pay Murray’s fee as an advance to Jackson.
Phillips’ testimony came after several days of often tense testimony from AEG Live executive Paul Gongaware, who told jurors he did not remember numerous details about Jackson’s rehearsals and emails he sent about the singer.
Panish sparred with Gongaware, and pointedly questioned Phillips, whom he called to the stand as a hostile witness.

MUMBAI—Bollywood actress Jiah Khan, who made her debut starring opposite acting legend Amitabh Bachchan, died in an apparent suicide at her home in the Indian city of Mumbai, police said on Tuesday.
The 25-year-old Khan, who grew up in London before moving to India for a career in Bollywood, was found dead in her home by her family, an officer said. Police were interviewing her neighbors, the officer said, adding that no suicide note was found.
“We suspect she hung herself at her home” late on Monday, a police official told Agence France-Presse, saying that her body has been sent for a post mortem.
Khan, who was born in New York before moving to London and then Mumbai, made her Bollywood debut in 2007 with the controversial film “Nishabd” (No words), playing the role of a teenager in love with her best friend’s much older father, played by Bachchan.
The movie received average reviews because of its provocative storyline but Khan was praised for her bold acting.
Khan, who changed her name from Nafisa Khan, went on to star alongside actor Aamir Khan in “Ghajini”, a box-office hit.
India’s film industry reacted with shock and sadness to the news, with actress Sonam Kapoor, a contemporary, tweeting: “Rip Jiah khan. Terrible tragedy.. Very very shocking and disturbing news.”
“Nobody should be in so much pain and a state of such hopelessness. I hope her soul finds some respite in death. #ripjiahkhan.”
Bachchan, when contacted by AFP on Tuesday, only said: “Shocked and disturbed.”
